National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Apr 2019 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

The overabundance of easily available prescription drugs is a major problem, especially around recreational drug users and people susceptible to addiction. How many times do we open our drawers or medicine cabinets and rummage past old bottles of medications? It’s likely many of us do that on a regular basis. However, with the country facing many significant societal issues regarding prescription drugs, we all need to focus on better medication management. One way to do so is to get involved in America’s formal National Drug Take Back Day.

What is the National Drug Take Back Day?

People need to take special care when disposing of expired and unneeded medications. It’s not a good idea to throw anything in the trash where others, such as children, can gain access to the drugs. It’s an equally bad idea to flush medications down the toilet. There’s always the potential of infesting waterways and water supplies with a harmful substance.

A few years back, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) began working with law enforcement on a solution. The solution they arrived at was National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The premise of this plan is for law enforcement agencies to designate safe places where people can drop off their unwanted medications. After these drop-off points receive the drugs, they then have FDA-approved ways of safely disposing of the drugs.

In 2018, more than 900,000 pounds of prescription medications met its fate. This year, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will occur on Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Fighting Prescription Medication Addiction

National Drug Take Back Day is but one option for combating prescription medication addiction. The other prevalent method is making sure those struggling with addiction have adequate access to a drug addiction rehab center. If National Prescription Drug Take Back Day can help any of us avoid the treatment process, it’s an event worth supporting.
